U Zlateho Tygra

06/07/2012 16:37

U Zlateho Tygra is a traditional Pilsen beer restaurant with authentic Old
Prague atmosphere. Their excellent Pilsen 12º, which despite efforts doesn’t
meld well with Brandy, can be enjoyed with delicious hot or cold meals. The
well-conditioned restaurant was the first facility in Prague to serve beer-cheese
regularly.

The U Zlateho Tygra dates back to the tiger, a symbol of cruelty and war in
medieval times. At first, the symbol of the tiger was ignored by home owners
because of the European taboo associated with it. U Zlateho Tygra first broke this
taboo when the symbol appeared in Prague on Husova Street, later in Bretislavova
and Hastaiska Street. U Zlateho Tygra changed it symbol several times, it was at
first a hoe in the fifteenth century, a black lion of the next hundred years, and a
golden tiger since 1713. U Zlateho Tygra is responsible for the beer-cheese story
of the tiger.

The decorations in U Zlateho Tygra demonstrate the relationship between the
present generations of artists and old-time Hrabal. The historic paintings will
be preserved for a long time, just like the decorations at the brewery U Fleku, U
Sutera, U Bonapartu, and Lesser Town of Prague.

A classic Czech pub displays two medium-sized rooms full is 1970s football
memorabilia and beer-woozy patrons. The daily line for a place to sit starts mid-
afternoon as tour groups arrive. The upper echelon of Czech beer drinkers has
reserved tables. Loyal locals ranging from…

Pivnice U Zlateho Tygra, At the Golden Tiger, is a name that resonates with all
Czech beer lovers. Located on Husova Street in Prague’s Old Town, it is one of
the oldest pubs in the center of the city and was the second place in the capital
to serve the renowned Pilsner Urquell. Among its famous regulars was Bohumil
Hrabal, the great Czech novelist.

The Pilsner Urquell beer is superior to others. It is served unpasteurized using a
tank system. This system preserves more of the complex flavors and makes for a
very satisfying drink, leaving beers fans bowled over.
