U Cerneho Vola

Walk up Nerudova(A-2), continue up Uvoz, make a right and you'll find The Black
Bull or U Cernoho Lva, as it's called by the locals. It is located in the heart of the
castle district, near the famous Loreto Church. The pub’s décor is befitting that of
an average bar with the best beer you can find in Prague, Velkopopvicky Kozel. The
outer façade features a trio of stucco figures above the door. It may not look like its
open when judged by its appearance from the outside, but if you step inside you'll be
greeted by the smoky atmosphere of a traditional beer hall. Long wooden tables and
benches line the tiled walls with only a small stain glassed window to filter in light.
With the communal style seating, you'll find locals and tourists sitting shoulder to
shoulder in a Babel-esque din of languages.

The atmosphere of this old world charmer is one of relaxation and comfort. The
brusque waiters wearing black aprons often scowl at customers that only order one
of the house specialty beers. So be prepared to let loose and have a great time in this
often boisterous pub. You may find someone drinking at a table alone, reading the
paper next to a table with a lively crowd of revelers. On any given day (or night)
you can find the rugged locals who have haunted this place for years mixed in with
tourists fresh from a tour of the castle seeking some refreshment or perhaps even a bit
of local flavor. Whether native or tourist, language holds no barrier here. Everyone
is always welcome. In fact, due to the limited seating, visitors are expected to join in
with the locals.

The Black Bull is known far and wide. Terry Jones of Monty Python fame is said
to be a fan but you won't find any big to do here. They simply offer exactly what their
tin sign states, “great beer and food.” It's top quality with great prices and none of
the scantily clad barmaids or flashy neon signs. Although built after World War II,
the murals lining the walls give the impression that the pub has been there as long as
the castles. Due to some rugged regulars buying the building, it managed to survive
the redevelopment period during the post 1989 building frenzy in Hradcany and kept
its unique charm. It ensured that the bearded artisans and businessmen would have
at least one place where they could afford to drink. Large beers are 21 kr (approx.
0.45 sterling each) and food ranges from about 20kr-40kr (.43 to .87 sterling) each.
Anyone looking for some good beer snacks, and local charm, this pub is well worth a
visit.
