Job Description
Ciena has a long established relationship with BT on Converged Packet Optical portfolio and has now extended that to cover Packet networks. BT has a well-defined Technology Introduction Process (TIP) requiring vendor’s to thoroughly test product on both vendor premises & in BT's lab environment in a configuration similar to BT Environment and configuration prior to BT deploying in their network.
As part of this TIP environment this role is to provide Ciena expertise both onsite and remote support to BT's lab engineers. The successful candidate will be able to provide consultancy across the Converged Packet Optical and Carrier Ethernet portfolio and act as technical lead across these products. It will involve specific onsite support in BT's lab in Adastral Park, Martlesham. This will involve liaising with BT on the configuration and testing required, troubleshooting and in acting as single point of contact between the multi-vendor test team at BT and Ciena test & verification, R&D & PLM teams.
Act as Technical lead into BT on optical and packet related products & solutions.
Provide consultative and hands on expertise to BT test teams in relation to the Ciena Portfolio, including Converged Optical, Packet and NMS.
Liaise with BT on HW and SW configuration and test initiatives and establish good working relationships with peers within BT.
Liaise with R&D and PLM to ensure issues identified through testing are understood and with PM to ensure resolution plans in place in accordance with BT needs.
Provide technical consultancy to BT on Ciena portfolio and operational questions they may have in relation to their deployment plans. Note, this role does not include Live Network Support but the successful candidate should be able to articulate, as part of the TIP process, the Operational advantages of Ciena Solution.
Act as the primary interface and customer advocate to the account team.
Lead testing execution on behalf of BT.
Lead the troubleshooting (collecting data and observations) and the resolution by working with engineering (/ R&D) resources to address raised customer issues
Active participation in the case review calls with PLM and R&D
Ensure customer is updated regularly on all issues during the testing
Support upgrades and installation of system hardware updates as required, as well as reconfiguration of test networks.
Develop test plans around BT specific demands and execute test cases against those plans. Note, testing will include both Network Elements and NMS.
Maintain Test Plan results and progress reports in a timely fashion
Required Skills
The successful candidate will be a very strong, technically capable individual with several years’ experience in the area of Converged Packet Optical & general packet networking.
They will be technically proficient in Carrier Ethernet technology with an excellent understanding of Carrier Ethernet Services (E-Line, E-Lan and E-Tree) & hands-on experience of provisioning of Carrier Ethernet and related technologies (G.8032, MPLS-TP, QinQ , Synch E / 1588v2 services etc. )
They will be technically proficient in Optical Networking technology with an excellent understanding of optical services such as xWDM, OTN etc. Previous experience with Ciena optical portfolio will be an advantage.
They will have sound judgment and able to articulate clearly Ciena position to BT and BT position to Ciena.
The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate good interpersonal, communication and negotiating skills.
This role will involve a lot of customer interaction so previous experience in a customer facing role would be advantageous.

Required Experience
Engineering Degree of equivalent demonstrable industry experience.
The ideal candidate will have several years (> 5 years) experience working across the packet and optical portfolio in the telecoms arena.
Industry certification such as MEF CECP or similar would be advantageous.
Utilize advanced test methodologies and troubleshooting techniques
Hands-on experience engineering , testing or deploying networks on Carrier Ethernet platforms with (Ciena, Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Juniper, Huawei, Adva )
Hands on experience with IP and related routing protocols (OSPF, BGP and ISIS)
Familiarity with other Transport, Switching and/or Layer 2 technologies and data networking.
Familiarity with Ciena products (39xx, 51xx platforms and associated mgmt with ESM etc.)
