The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools is a non-profit organization that manages a portfolio of some of LA’s most underserved public schools and focuses on piloting innovations that can be scaled across the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Launched in 2008 by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the Partnership is a collaboration of LAUSD, the City of Los Angeles and the philanthropic sector, and today it serves approximately 14,000 students across 16 campuses in Watts, Boyle Heights and South LA.

Job Description:
The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools seeks a Chief Strategy and Operating Officer (CSOO) to help support the organization as it strives to generate transformational outcomes for the students and families it serves, and scale its impact throughout the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and the state of California.
The CSOO will help drive school performance and system change by overseeing delivery of and capacity building around all aspects of school and home office operations. He or she will manage a team of 11 responsible for operations, finance, talent and performance management, technology and organizational data and strategy. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the CSOO is a critical member of a small executive leadership team and will play a significant role in the near- and long-term direction of the organization.
This role is an ideal opportunity for an entrepreneurial and strategically-minded operator to dramatically impact systems level change for thousands of students across Los Angeles.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Organizational Strategy
• Lead development and implementation of transformation strategy for all key school site operational functions, including talent management for 1,400 school site staff, budget development and management for $100+ million in public funds, educational technology, data and performance management, facilities, procurement, compliance and risk management
• Supervise, design and execute the Partnership’s growth strategy, working with leadership, Board of Directors, LAUSD and legal counsel to oversee renewal of existing schools and to launch new schools as appropriate
• Support the CEO in recruiting and managing the Board of Directors
Systems Level Change Initiatives
• Build and mobilize coalitions, relationships and partnerships with key stakeholders (including LAUSD, school staff, parents and community leaders) to implement key initiatives to improve school performance across LAUSD
• Pursue policy changes through advocacy, litigation and other strategies, in coordination with the executive leadership team, to improve students’ opportunities throughout the Partnership schools, LAUSD, and in some cases, across California
• Partner with key stakeholders at the Partnership and LAUSD to scale initiatives to improve student achievement for the 535,000 students in LAUSD and the 5.74 million students in California
Team Management
• Recruit, develop and inspire world class leadership throughout the organization
• Provide day-to-day management, mentorship and development of the organization’s operations team
• Serve on small executive leadership team including the CEO, Chief Schools Officer and Chief Academic Officer to ensure cross-department collaboration and efficiency
School and Organizational Operations
• Manage and improve day-to-day home office operations including home office budget, performance management, human resources for home office staff, risk management, procurement, facilities, legal issues and technology
• Perform key financial functions for the organization including managing a $9.5 million budget, leading the preparation of audited financial statement and tax returns and continually ensuring financial sustainability
• Drive school satisfaction by ensuring customized service across functions and strong communication channels with school leadership and throughout the organization
• Coach and develop school staff in order to build capacity for schools
• Play a leadership role on select instructional initiatives, jointly with other members of the executive leadership team
• Collaborate with legal counsel to draft and implement legal agreements, manage and mitigate legal risk, and ensure compliance with city, state and federal laws and regulatory mandates
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
• A minimum of a bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university; MBA or master’s degree in a related field preferred
• 10+ years of professional experience with at least 5 years of executive/ senior management experience in a high-performing organization
• Track record of successfully meeting or exceeding organizational targets, achieving ambitious goals and driving significant impact
• Strong management skills, with practiced capacity to develop and execute a variety of activities ranging from the external and visible to the operational and day-to-day
• Outstanding track record of managing multiple projects simultaneously with an attention to both the big picture and day-to-day details
• Exceptional integrity, with the ability to stay true to one’s own cause and purpose while incorporating the opinions, needs and feedback of others
• Creativity and flexibility with an ability to thrive in a fast-paced and frequently changing environment
• Strategic finance experience and a track record of success in developing systems to support organizational growth
• Experience engaging in the complex political, educational and civic landscape of major cities a plus
